The Mold Is the Most Expensive Way to Ask a Question
An injection mold can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands. Once you order one, you have committed to a shape, a material, and a bet that people want the thing you built.
Most people order the mold before they know the answer to the only question that matters: will anyone actually buy this.
There is a cheaper way to ask. It costs about fifty dollars and takes a weekend. It is called a demand test, and it belongs in your process long before you talk to a manufacturer, and honestly, before you talk to a patent attorney too.
What a Demand Test Actually Is
A demand test is not a prototype. It is not a working model. It is a small, honest experiment designed to answer one question: do real people, who are not your friends or your family, want to give you money or their attention for this idea.
You are not testing whether the idea works mechanically. You are testing whether the problem you think you solved is a problem anyone else feels.
This distinction matters more than it sounds. Plenty of clever, functional inventions die not because they fail to work, but because nobody was waiting for them.
Why This Matters Before Tooling, Not After
Tooling locks in your design decisions. Changing a mold after you have paid for it is expensive and slow. If your demand test reveals that people care about a different feature, a different price point, or a different use case than the one you built, you want to know that before the steel is cut, not after.
There is also a strategic reason to test demand early if you are thinking about intellectual property at all. Filing a patent application is itself a bet on the value of a specific version of your idea. Understanding what people actually respond to helps you know which version is worth protecting, and which details are just decoration. That is a separate conversation from patentability, but it shapes how you think about your invention's core.
The $50 Framework
Here is a version of the test that fits inside a fifty dollar budget, roughly.
Step 1: Build a One-Page Landing Page (Free to $15)
You do not need a working product. You need a page that describes the product as if it already exists. Use a free or cheap website builder. Include:
- A one-sentence description of the problem
- A one-sentence description of your solution
- A single image or sketch, even a rough one
- A button that says something like "Notify Me When This Launches" or "Reserve One"
The button does not need to charge anyone yet, unless you want to go further, which we will get to.
Step 2: Write One Honest Ad (Free)
Describe the product plainly. Do not oversell. You are trying to find people who have the problem, not people who like exciting language. A flat, clear description filters for genuine interest better than a hyped one does.
Step 3: Put Fifteen to Thirty-Five Dollars Behind It
Run a small paid ad campaign on a social platform where your likely users spend time. You are not trying to go viral. You are trying to get a few hundred to a couple thousand targeted eyeballs on your page.
Set a hard budget. Thirty dollars is often enough to see a signal. You are watching one number: what percentage of visitors take the action you asked for.
Step 4: Read the Signal, Not the Compliments
A conversion rate on a cold landing page above two or three percent, for people who do not know you, is a meaningful signal. Below half a percent, even if a few relatives clicked the button, is a sign to rethink either the problem statement or the audience, not necessarily the invention itself.
What This Test Cannot Tell You
Be honest about the limits here. A demand test tells you whether people respond to the idea of your product. It does not tell you:
- Whether the product is technically feasible to manufacture
- Whether your specific design is novel enough to be worth protecting, which is the kind of question a patent attorney would ask after reviewing prior art (the existing publicly known solutions, patents, and products in your space)
- Whether you can build it at a price people will actually pay
Those are separate questions, each with their own cheap-before-expensive version. But demand comes first, because there is no point refining manufacturing costs or IP strategy for a product nobody wants.
A Version With Real Money on the Line
If you want a sharper signal, replace the free "notify me" button with a genuine pre-order or a refundable deposit, even five dollars. People's stated interest and their willingness to hand over money are very different things. A hundred email signups sound promising. Three people willing to put down five dollars each tell you something more real.
This version takes more setup, since you will need a basic way to collect payment, but many free tools support small transactions without a fee beyond standard processing.
Reading the Result Without Fooling Yourself
The hardest part of a demand test is not running it. It is interpreting it honestly.
If the numbers are weak, resist the urge to explain them away. "The ad was bad" or "the audience was wrong" might be true, but they might also be the story you tell yourself because you already love the idea. Try a second version of the ad with a different audience before concluding the market is fine and your execution was the problem.
If the numbers are strong, resist the opposite urge to skip straight to tooling. A good demand signal on a landing page still needs to survive contact with an actual working prototype, actual pricing, and actual manufacturing constraints.
Where This Fits in the Bigger Picture
A demand test sits early in the process of turning an idea into something real. Roughly, the order looks like this:
- Clarify the problem and the specific solution
- Search prior art to understand what already exists in your space
- Run a cheap demand test like the one above
- Build a rough, low-cost prototype to test function
- Refine the design based on both demand feedback and function testing
- Consider tooling, manufacturing partners, and formal IP strategy
Notice that patents and molds show up late, not early. That order is intentional. Spending on legal protection or manufacturing before you understand demand is a common way ordinary inventors burn through savings on something that never had a market, or discover after tooling that the version people wanted was slightly different from the one they built.
The Real Value of a Fifty Dollar Test
Fifty dollars will not tell you everything. It will not replace a real prototype, a real cost analysis, or a real conversation about what parts of your invention may qualify for protection. What it does is cheap, fast, and honest: it tells you whether to keep going before you have spent the money that is much harder to walk away from.
That is the whole point. Not certainty. Just enough signal to decide whether the next, more expensive step is worth taking.
