The upfront cost to develop an invention, from early idea to attorney-ready

Four paths to the same goal, with every outside figure sourced and dated. The biggest cost is doing the work in the wrong order, not any one service.

Prices checked 4 Oct 2026 · ranges are estimates · see sources and assumptions · try your own numbers
01 · The same goal

One idea, from spark to attorney-ready.

Every path ends in the same place: an idea you’ve checked against the market, searched against existing patents, and described well enough to hand to a patent attorney or a manufacturer. Filing a patent and formal patent drawings come after that on every path, so every total leaves them out.

02 · EntreDash

Every purchase, one row each.

Screen five ideas, then put your money into the one that holds up: build tools, a 3D model, a full prior-art search, and five rounds of changes. Prices are pay-as-you-go. No plan needed.

The EntreDash search report is an automated search, not an attorney’s legal opinion, and EntreDash doesn’t file patents. Use it to decide which idea is worth paying an attorney to look at.

03 · Hiring it out

The traditional route, in the right order.

One idea, taken through professionals and freelancers, with the search before the design.

04 · When the search comes last

Search last, and you’ve already paid for every idea that fails.

The usual order is sketch, then CAD, then a consult and a search. If the search finds something close, the work built on that idea has to be redone or thrown away. Patent practitioners recommend searching first for this reason [4]Should you do a prior art search before filing?Goodman Allen Donnelly · checked 4 Oct 2026Searches usually under $2,000; inventors are often surprised and may need to design around. In the US, if you file within one year of your own public disclosure, that disclosure doesn’t count against you [18]MPEP 2153: Prior art exceptionsUSPTO · checked 4 Oct 2026The one-year grace period for your own disclosure. Most other countries have no such grace period, so showing your idea publicly before filing can cost you foreign patent rights.

FTC warning

Be careful with “we’ll take your idea to market” offers.

The FTC warns that dishonest invention promoters charge thousands of dollars in fees, often upfront, for little in return [13]Invention marketing scamsFederal Trade Commission · checked 4 Oct 2026Thousands of dollars in fees for little in return. 08 · When to bring in a professional

Arrive prepared, and their hours go further.

You still need a patent attorney or agent for a legal opinion and for filing. What changes is what you bring them. Instead of paying billable hours to work out what your invention is, you hand them:

  • Market, patent and financial memos on the idea that survived screening
  • A prior-art search plan and full search report
  • A numbered 2D sketch and a 3D concept model

Assumptions

  1. A1
Market validation by a freelancer takes 10 to 20 hours at $25–$70 an hour [5]: $250–$1,400.
  2. A2
A CAD revision round takes 10 to 20 hours at $25–$125 an hour [9][10]: $250–$2,500 per round. We assume the model is revised, not rebuilt from scratch.
  3. A3
A sketch revision takes 2 to 4 hours at $25–$40 an hour [7]: $50–$160 per round.
  4. A4
A try that doesn’t pan out still pays for a search, a consult and a CAD revision, because a search is how you find out. Four of five tries don’t pan out.
  5. A5
Monthly tools are billed month to month. The AI assistant is a business tier, which doesn’t train on your content by default; its two-seat minimum makes it $50 a month [21]. A survey tool is needed for about one month of fielding.
  6. A6
EntreDash prices are pay-as-you-go with no plan. A monthly plan can lower the screening cost.
  7. A7
A DIY project keeps the monthly tools for two to three months. A free personal CAD license is enough for concept models you use to communicate the idea; a commercial license ($680 a year, billed annually [12]) is needed once you sell or work commercially.
  8. A8
Your own time, our estimate; there is no published study. Using CAD: a first simple model takes 10 to 20 hours [25], and getting confident enough to model a multi-part invention and revise it takes weeks of practice, which we put at 40 to 100 or more hours. Searching: a careful prior-art search takes 5 to 40 or more hours for someone who already knows the method [26]. Learning that method first (classification codes, reading claims, a book or seminar, trial and error) adds 20 to 80 or more hours. Market research time has no published figure and is left out.
  9. A9
Your time on EntreDash: each strategy session takes under 15 minutes, so 15 sessions (three memos for each of five ideas) take under 4 hours; reading the memos and working through the drawing, the 3D model and the search report adds about 2 to 4 hours.

Questions about invention costs

Taking one idea from a rough concept to something you can hand a patent attorney typically costs about $2,450 to $11,950 when you hire professionals and freelancers in the right order: a consult, a patentability search and opinion, market validation, a business plan, concept sketches and a 3D CAD model. Doing the same work with EntreDash costs $569.96 for one idea. Filing a patent costs extra on every path.

Test the idea before you pay a professional.

Your first strategy session is free. Screen your idea against the market and existing patents before you spend on design or drafting.
