Sample design decomposition. Built in the EntreDash Design Workspace for a real example invention.

Your idea, broken into a buildable design.

Once your idea has a verdict worth acting on, the Design Workspace helps you break it into its real parts — each with a function, materials, and how it connects. It's the structured foundation that feeds patent drawings, prototyping, and the detailed description in a filing. This is the decomposition for an example invention: Adjustable-pressure wrist rest with integrated heating.

Design Decomposition

7 components

Each part is captured with what it does, what it's made of, and how it connects to the others. Materials are first-class — they drive prototyping and the patent's detailed description.
1

Outer shell

Rigid base that houses the bladder, pump, and electronics and sets the rest on the desk.

Materials
Glass-filled nylonTPU base pad
Glass-filled nylonRecommended
+Stiff and tough enough for a thin wall, and injection-molds cleanly.
−Costs more than plain plastics and shows fibers on a raw surface.
ABS
+Cheap, easy to mold, and takes a smooth finish.
−Softens near the heater and can crack at snap-fits over time.
Polycarbonate
+Very impact resistant and handles warmth well.
−Scratches easily and needs careful molding to avoid stress cracks.
Connections
Snap-fits to the top cover (7); bonded TPU pad on the underside for grip.
Notes
Wall thickness ~2.5mm. Vent slot for the pump intake.
2

Inflatable air bladder

Adjustable-firmness support surface — the core novel element. Inflates and deflates to change wrist pressure.

Materials
Welded TPU film
Connections
Seated in the outer shell (1); air line to the pump/valve (3); sits beneath the top cover (7).
Notes
Single-pump multi-bladder switching is the differentiator flagged in the strategy memo. Target 0.2–0.6 PSI range.
3

Micro air pump and valve

Inflates the bladder on demand and holds or releases pressure to set firmness.

Materials
Brushless micro-diaphragm pumpSilicone check valve
Connections
Air line to the bladder (2); powered by the control board (6).
Notes
Quiet (<35 dB) pump for desk use. Auto-hold when target pressure reached.
4

Heating element

Warms the wrist contact surface. The second differentiator: per-zone closed-loop temperature control.

Materials
Etched polyimide heating film
Connections
Laminated under the top cover (7); driven by the controller (5); powered by the board (6).
Notes
Embedded thermistors per zone. Hard cap at 43°C for skin safety.
5

Temperature controller

Closed-loop control of the heating film using the embedded thermistors; enforces the safety cap.

Materials
PCB-mounted MCUThermistors
Connections
Reads thermistors in (4); commands the board (6).
Notes
PID loop, per-zone setpoints. Independent over-temp cutoff.
6

USB-C power and control board

Supplies power, runs the pump and heater, and exposes firmness/temperature controls.

Materials
FR-4 PCBUSB-C PD input
Connections
Powers the pump (3), heater (4), and controller (5).
Notes
USB-C PD so it runs off a laptop charger. Capacitive touch controls on the cover.
7

Top cover / wrist contact surface

The soft surface the wrist rests on; transmits heat and conforms to the bladder.

Materials
Silicone overmoldMicrofiber facing
Connections
Snap-fits to the shell (1); laminated to the heater (4); sits over the bladder (2).
Notes
Antimicrobial facing. Removable for cleaning.
